We believe that there has to be a clear framework to guide the future development and growth of Minchinhampton, to prevent the continued spate of speculative attempts by developers to develop on green field sites and encroach further into the countryside. We support those who have been urging Minchinhampton Parish Council for some time to create and adopt a Neighbourhood Plan, in consultation with their parishioners. We are delighted that the Parish Council voted on December 14th 2015 to progress a Neighbourhood Plan and allocated funding in the 2016 Budget.

Here are the main arguments for a Neighbourhood Plan:
- A Neighbourhood Plan is not concerned with housing development alone. Its aims are also to identify benefits from new development or regeneration, to provide a sustainable future and to secure community services and improve accessibility, through policies and proposals in each area.
- In order to support the future economic health of the town difficult choices may need to be made, especially about development outside the current settlement boundary. Consulting Minchinhampton's residents will be essential in this decision-making process.
- The Stroud Local Plan will not form an adequate framework for planning future development. Policy SO1 of the Local Plan specifies only “up to 100 new homes” for Minchinhampton, with development “focussed principally at Strategic Locations”. We do not believe that this policy will be adequate to check developers' interest in testing the limits of Minchinhampton’s settlement boundary.
- Minchinhampton Parish Council does not know what people want. A Neighbourhood Plan enables the Council to find out exactly what people want.
